Turning writing into a work of art.

“Pass the Buck” Online Project and Lead Writing Contest

Pass the Buck Project

In Education World’s “Pass the Buck” Internet/email project, students track the journey of one-dollar bills as they are passed from person to person, community to community, and state to state. Fifty classrooms will act as “Buck Passers”; each Buck Passer classroom will place into circulation a specially marked one-dollar bill. In the months that follow, people who receive one of the Pass the Buck dollar bills will report its location to Education World — and we will share that information with students everywhere by updating our “Track the Bucks” pages.

Our school has been selected to represent the state of California for this project. I have the buck, now I just need a student to do the honors of passing it into the community. There is a catch… or a hook… or a lead… or a grabber… in order to determine who gets to pass the buck, I am challenging you to a lead writing contest.

In sixth grade, we just finished a unit on how to write effective leads, hooks and grabbers. Use your knowledge of different types of leads, what you’ve learned about your own strengths as a lead writer (through our lead writing activity), and your imagination to come up with the first few sentences of a story. The only requirement is that your lead must help us begin a story based on our “traveling Bill.”

Questions? Email Mrs. Farnum. Interested in submitting an entry? Write your lead idea on our blog to enter by clicking on the comments below and leaving a reply. Good luck…let’s pass that buck!

    Traveling Bill

Traveling hand in hands of black, white, and occasionally green people all across the globe, I have made my way through wallets, stores, the moon , and all places imaginable for my real adventure to begin in sunny, hip California. My adventure could take me anywhere. ”This is dangerous,” some might say, “for a guy so small against a world so big and full of crooks and demons.” I thought, “Look at it as a never-ending ocean full of possiblities waiting for someone to discover.” And that someone just happens to be me– Traveling Bill!

When you see money, what do you think of? Is it the things you can buy with it, or is it some other cause? Well, my name is Bill, I’m a dollar bill, and I’m going to tell you about my adventures traveling over the United States of America.

The next second it was gone.

The crowd goes wild! It is almost time for Bill to find his rightful owner. He doesn’t know it yet, but he will find himself on an amazing adventure traveling the United States!

When I was in that ladies purse, I was so excited to find out where my next vacation was going to take place – maybe Hawaii, Jamaica or  even ancient Rome. The minute the tall, blonde woman pulled me out of her large, red purse I saw a tall bearded man take me; the woman explained to the man the concept of the game and he replied, “What a cawinkidink. I was just going to take a long trip to…” (To be continued.)

Have you ever expected a dollar bill to travel? Is it possible for a dollar bill to travel from city to city or perhaps state to state? The bill we passed on to other people has done it.

  7.   Hailey D. Says:

Life moves in fast motion, but have you ever stopped to think about something as simple as where a dollar bill may end up? You may ask, “What ever happens to a dollar bill after 10 or more people spend it?” Could that dollar bill end up on the other side of the world? How long would that take?

  8.   Gigi M Says:

When we send something into the world, we will never know where it will end up – especially a one dollar bill.

  9.   Ryan M. Says:

“Thank you”, I said as the cashier handed me my change. I looked down and saw pen markings all over the dollar bill the man behind the cash register had given me. When I looked closer, I realized that people had written on the dollar where they were when they recieved it. The places were from all over the world. I quickly scribbled Trabuco Canyon, California on the bill and stuffed it into my pocket.

  10.   Little Lauren A Says:

    Ding! The cash drawer opens.

  11.   KELLIE S. Says:

COULD YOUR DOLLAR BILL TOUCH A FAMOUS SINGER OR BE IN A FAMOUS PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE’S WALLET? COULD THAT LONELY ONE DOLLAR BE THE ONLY 1 DOLLAR AMONG MANY HUNDREDS OF BIG BILLS?
